'Bioshock' Studio Irrational Games is Closing
« on: February 19, 2014, 12:44:02 PM »

The creator of BioShock has abandoned the franchise and shut down Irrational Games, as he moves to work on digital-only titles.

The surprise news was announced on a blog written by Levine, the man who helped to found Irrational Games back in 1997. There doesn’t appear to be any bad blood between him and owner Take-Two though, as the new studio he’ll be creating will still be part of the company.

How the dozens of staff at Irrational feel about it is another matter though, with only 15 retaining their jobs at the new studio. Although Levine is at pains to insist that he and Take-Two will do everything possible to find the others jobs.

‘My passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we’ve done before. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers,’ wrote Levine.

‘In time we will announce a new endeavour with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.

‘Thanks to Irrational and 2K’s passion in developing the games, and the fans who believe in it, BioShock has generated retail revenues of over a half billion dollars and secured an iconic place in gaming. I’m handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative. If we’re lucky, we’ll build something half as memorable as BioShock.’

Levine’s final addition to the BioShock series will be the second chapter of BioShock Infinite’s two-part downloadable content Burial At Sea, which is due out on March 25.

Who Take-Two will get to work on any subsequent BioShock games is unclear, as although 2K Marin did a surprisingly good job with BioShock 2 (which Levine was not involved with) the studio has now closed.

The remaining staff were offered position at a new 2K developer in San Francisco, but studio head Rod Fergusson left to work on Gears Of War for Microsoft before any new game could be annouced.

However, given this news it seems more than possible that the closure of Irrational Games has been on the cards for some time and that this new studio is already working on BioShock 3.
